Mr. Miao – Regional development opportunities

I graduated from Tsinghua University and worked in auto industry before getting my MBA. After joining BASF in 1999, I received an opportunity for a 9-month assignment in the regional headquarter in Singapore where I worked in production management and market development. After the assignment I returned to China, and was promoted to Business Development Manager in 2005 and was promoted to Senior Manager a year later.

The reason I joined BASF was the quality of BASF people. The reason I stay is the strong growth opportunities it provides. In BASF, my bosses are very supportive of my career development. Their messages are always clear and honest, and they fully deliver on those promises. “Walk the talk” is not just a phrase in our leadership compass, but a strong culture I observe and learn from our senior management daily. From them I see the vision of the company. People in BASF are very open-minded. Any good initiative can get full support and encouragement from the management.

I worked in several MNCs prior to joining BASF in 2005 in Taiwan and was transferred to Shanghai in 2006. My role has now been extended to supply chain consulting. The assignment not only broadened my skills from the operational side to the overall supply chain performance improvement, but it also helped me to know more about BASF through interaction and working with different business units and companies. During this period, I facilitated a global project in Greater China to help supply chain staff build their competency through online courses.

What truly sets BASF apart is its respect of employees. BASF not only values the performance and key deliverables, but also cares deeply about employees’ development. It invests a lot in training and helps us to develop competency in order to deliver the best result. And I feel that the company is like a big family. Everyone, no matter what your rank, works hand in hand towards the same goal.

I was an engineer with a design institute before joining BASF in 2001. I knew BASF had interesting projects beforehand but was still very impressed by the scale and advanced level of its production lines and R & D, and how well the company understands every technical detail along every step. Each time we had a problem, we can always find an expert within our global BASF network to help us. In 2002, when I was in charge of running a certain production plant and encountered many problems my counterpart in Germany was able to support and offer advice.

I graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1996, and worked for a chemical company and a trading firm before joined BASF in 2000. Two things attracted me then were BASF’s No. 1 reputation in chemical industry and its reliable German culture. During the last 8 years with BASF, I got 5 promotions, starting from sourcing assistant, to sourcing officer, grew to manager and senior manager. I was also selected for overseas training in the functional that I specialize in. When I returned to China I was given the responsibility of leading a team. It was extremely challenging and I truly appreciate the support and guidance of my boss and the leadership programs that helped me to understand strategic thinking and concepts.

I enjoy my work even after 8 years, as I face both internal customers and external suppliers all around the world. Everyday, there are new changes and challenges appearing in the market. I need to figure out the issue, and incorporate the changes into our business practices. What makes me the most proud is my team. My work has been both attractive and challenging to me.

Photo Mr. Xu – Exciting job and opportunity to work with colleagues from diverse background

After 8 years working experience with an institution and another international chemical company, I joined BASF as a Sales Manager. Everyday is exciting, because I’m part of various challenging and interesting projects and I have tremendous opportunities to learn and grow. There are three key things I like about BASF. First is the systematic and professional way it runs projects. For every single project, it looks at the safety, legal, environmental, and people (employees) aspect. Second, is the integrated big family culture within a truly international company. I work on a regular base with colleagues from Germany, Sweden, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, India and other Asian countries. Although people have different background, we all work toward the same goal under the BASF Family. Third, is the fairness and openness in the way BASF operates. We have a matrix organization, where each employee is evaluated not only by the supervisor, but also from different levels and aspects. Most feedback is very objective and fair. BASF also communicates thoroughly with all the employees about big decisions to help us understand the rationale behind them.

Photo Dr. Xue – Home grown talent

Impressed with the industrial seminar BASF organized at my University campus, I joined BASF as a researcher right after getting my PhD from East China University of Science and Technology in 1998.

After spending first 3 months in a lab, I took an opportunity to work in a production plant in need of a management fix, assisting a German supervisor. I spent 4 months doing shift work and helping with translation. The workload was heavy and people thought it was strange for a PhD to do plant shift work. But for me it was the best experience! It not only fundamentally changed my outlook from that of an academic to a professional manager. It helped me quickly understand the equipment, manufacturing technique and the workers on the ground. That was the real kick-off to my career. I continued to work in production and was promoted to Deputy Plant Manager, Plant Manager, Department Manager, Division Manager, and now General Manager.

I highly appreciated BASF for providing me these opportunities and supporting me all the way through. On top of the tremendous on-the-job learning from my German colleagues and plant workers, BASF has given me regular and systemic management training such as my diploma of management, many company trainings and regional development center and EMBA.
